6 Ways to Get the ZIP Back Into Your Life in Middle Age

When you were twenty years old you were full of boundless energy. You could stay up all night studying for exams, work hard the next day, and party hard into the following night without batting an eye. You could effortlessly balance work, play, sports, hanging out with friends, and the myriad other antics that a twenty-year-old gets up to.

And then you hit thirty. You didn’t want to admit to yourself that you started to notice a difference in your energy levels. And as the years and decades roll by, your energy levels continue to drastically plummet.

Go for a long, brisk walk every day through your favorite park or along your favorite beach. Treat yourself by walking to a destination where you can find a great cup of coffee or perhaps do a little shoe shopping, or pick up that electronic device you’ve been eyeing. Wear headphones and listen to your favorite music as you go, or bring along a buddy. Or join a sports team or a fitness class. These are great ways to get out of the house, meet people, and get your blood pumping a little harder!

Have Great Sleeps

The irony is that when your energy levels are low, you are typically also not sleeping very well. A great sleep leads to an energetic, productive day. Throw in a little exercise and you’re ready for another great sleep. Try to go to bed at around the same time each night to help your body’s internal clock prepare for bed time. Make sure you sleep in a very dark room, since light inhibits melatonin secretion and interferes with proper sleep. Do NOT watch TV in bed before going to sleep – this will make it harder to fall asleep and can be disruptive during sleep. And whatever you do, do not sleep with the television on! Try to get in the habit of doing some light reading or even a quiet meditation right before you go to bed. This will transition you from your hectic day to the tranquility of sleep.
