MLB Baseball to Begin Testing for Human Growth Hormone

Major League Baseball has gone through a horrible image of late with all their steroid and human growth hormone controversy. The league has been plagued with many of their top level star being named or caught using performance enhancing drugs.

Those on the list include big name stars like Sammy Sosa, Ken Caminiti, Jason Giambi, Benito Santiago, Gary Sheffield, Jose Canseco, Mark McGwire, Chuck Finley, Barry Bonds, Miguel Tejada, Lenny Dykstra, Roger Clemens, Miguel Tejada, Eric Gagne, Chuck Knoblauch and Alex Rodriguez. The baseball record books are forever tarnished with players breaking baseball’s records in what is now known as the steroid era.

As a way to improve the image of the league, Commissioner Bud Selig has just announced that Major League Baseball will now became the first North American professional sports league to test for human growth hormone.

Selig announced that blood testing for HGH will begin immediately as part of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The blood testing is limited to minor league players because they are not members of the players’ association, which means that testing is not subject to collective bargaining. Testing in the minor leagues will allow Selig to see how the test works on a trial basis before asking the players’ union to agree to testing, The New York Times reports. Previously, most blood testing for HGH in sports has been limited to Olympic athletes but the MLB now wants to out a trial in the league to clean up the apparent rampant use of HGH by many of its players.

“This is big news,” a MLB executive said, “I won’t be surprised if there are bunch of positives/suspensions. Players likely assumed they were ‘safe’ to take it.” Baseball scores will report that a bunch will come out positive.

Commissioner of Major League Baseball, Bud Selig, first began this program in 2001; the blood testing will be a part of Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. In baseball, odds are that there will be suspensions, but the numbers are still not known.

”The implementation of blood testing in the minor leagues represents a significant step in the detection of the illegal use of human growth hormone,” Selig said in a statement. ”HGH testing provides an example for all of our drug policies in the future.”

The National Center for Drug Free Sport will be collecting the blood samples after games are played.

Dr. Gary Green, medical director for Major League Baseball, referred to the testing as ”a major development in the detection of a substance that has previously been undetectable.”

”The combination of widespread availability and the lack of detection have led to reports of use of this drug amongst athletes,” Green said. ”This is the first generation of HGH testing and Major League Baseball will continue to fund the Partnership for Clean Competition for ongoing research to refine testing procedures in this area.”

Minor leaguers, selected randomly, will have blood drawn after games from their non-dominant arm, and players who test positive for HGH will face a 50-game suspension

The player union has been opposing the testing of HGH and other steroids as there has not been a true test for measure HGH. But there has been significant improvement of late to catch HGH and they league will now implant a testing policy.
